Ceramic coating is the service I get asked about more than any other at Burton Auto Detailing. It's also the one people arrive with the most confusion about. Most of that confusion comes from the gap between what a $50 Amazon kit can do and what a Gyeon-certified installer can do in a climate-controlled facility after full paint correction. Those are not the same product, and they don't produce the same result.
This guide walks through what ceramic coating actually is, the three packages I offer, what each one costs in 2026, and how I decide which tier to recommend when a customer rolls into the shop on 12th Street NW. For a deeper pricing dive, see my 2026 Canton ceramic coating pricing guide.
What Ceramic Coating Actually Is
The Science
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer built primarily from silicon dioxide (SiO2), the same compound you find in quartz and glass. When I apply it to your clear coat, it goes through a chemical process called condensation curing. As the solvent evaporates, SiO2 molecules cross-link with each other and bond to the hydroxyl groups on the clear coat surface, forming a rigid, glass-like layer that is chemically integrated with the paint rather than sitting on top of it.
The results of that bonding are measurable:
- Hydrophobic surface: Water contact angles of 100 to 115 degrees on premium coatings, compared to 60 to 70 degrees on bare clear coat. Water beads into tight spheres and rolls off, carrying surface contamination with it.
- UV blocking: High-quality ceramic coatings block up to 99% of UV-A and UV-B radiation, slowing the photodegradation of clear coat and underlying pigment that causes paint to fade and oxidize.
- Chemical resistance:The cured SiO2 layer resists acids, alkalis, and solvents. Bird droppings (pH 3.5 to 4.5), tree sap, road salt (NaCl in aqueous solution), and industrial fallout that would etch bare clear coat get largely neutralized by the coating's chemical stability.
- Hardness: Premium professional coatings achieve 9H hardness on the pencil hardness scale, harder than the clear coat beneath them, providing a sacrificial layer that absorbs light abrasion before it reaches your paint.
What Ceramic Coating Does NOT Do
I want to be direct about the limits, because the marketing around this category overpromises.
- A coating is not scratch-proof. A 9H ceramic coating is harder than clear coat, but it is not harder than sand, gravel, or a sharp key. It resists fine scratches and swirl marks from improper washing. It does not prevent rock chips or intentional scratches.
- A coating does not replace paint protection film (PPF). PPF absorbs physical impact; ceramic coating does not. For high-impact areas like the hood leading edge, front bumper, and side mirrors, PPF is the right solution. Many customers combine both: PPF on vulnerable areas, ceramic coating over the whole vehicle.
- A coating does not eliminate washing. Coated vehicles stay cleaner longer and are significantly easier to wash. They still need regular cleaning. Contamination that sits on any surface long enough will eventually stain or etch, coating or not.
- A coating does not fix existing paint defects. Whatever is under the coating stays under the coating. Swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation present at application time are sealed in for its full lifespan. Often the added gloss makes those defects more visible, not less.
My Three Ceramic Coating Packages
Burton Auto Detailing is a Gyeon Certified Detailer and a 3M Authorized Dealer, which means I've been trained, equipped, and audited to install their professional products to their standards. The Gyeon Q² line isn't sold to the public at all; certified installers are the only purchase channel. Everything below uses those professional products, applied in my climate-controlled facility where temperature and humidity stay inside the manufacturer specs during application and the initial cure.
Seasonal Package - 3M Ceramic Boost Spray
Up to 6 months of protection. Pricing is $250 small, $325 medium, $375 large, $450 XL. This is the tier I recommend for a secondary vehicle, a vehicle going into a resale window, or someone who wants to try professional chemistry before committing to a multi-year package. You get real hydrophobic beading, a much slicker surface, and easier cleaning. You don't get the full chemical resistance of the Gyeon Q² line.
Standard Package - Gyeon Q² CanCoat Pro
One full layer of Gyeon's professional-grade Q² CanCoat Pro. Up to 1 year of protection. Pricing is $500 small, $700 medium, $950 large, $1,125 XL. This is the package I recommend for most Canton daily drivers. You get full chemical resistance against road salt and pH-range cleaners, deep gloss, and real hydrophobic performance without a multi-year commitment.
Presidential Package - Gyeon Q² Mohs EVO (Two Layers)
Two full layers of Gyeon's flagship paint coating. Gyeon manufacturer warranty of 36 months / 25,000 miles on a single layer or 48 months / 31,000 miles on two layers. Pricing is $1,250 small, $1,500 medium, $1,800 large, $2,000 XL. This package also includes the Gyeon Q²M Glass Ceramic Coating on the windshield (12 months of hydrophobic glass protection) and one free maintenance wash. It's the coating I specify for high-value vehicles and customers who want the longest protection window in my menu.
A Canton Example: The Stark County GLE
A local Stark County real-estate agent brought me her 2022 Mercedes GLE last fall. She uses it six days a week showing houses around Jackson Township and North Canton, and it had picked up a summer's worth of iron fallout from construction sites plus light swirling from a tunnel wash she'd been using near the office. Pearl white, so every speck showed.
I talked her through the three tiers. Presidential would have been the defensible choice on a vehicle that age and value, but she told me she was rotating into a new lease in roughly 18 months. That changed the math. I recommended the Standard Package over full Presidential. One year of Gyeon Q² CanCoat Pro covered her intended ownership window with full chemical resistance, and she kept the paint-correction budget she had planned for the two-stage correction the GLE actually needed.
Total ticket: two-stage correction at $1,199, Standard Package on a medium vehicle at $700. She picked the vehicle up Friday afternoon and I walked her through the hydrophobic test at the inspection bay. A coating worked for her situation. I won't pretend that's always true. On a newer lease or a vehicle selling inside 90 days, I'd have steered her toward the Seasonal Package instead.
Consumer DIY vs Professional Coating: The Facts
Consumer ceramic coatings, graphene coatings, and SiO2 spray sealants sold at auto parts stores are real products. They provide real protection compared to nothing. The comparison to professional Gyeon chemistry is a question of facts, not marketing:
| Factor | Consumer DIY Coating | Professional Gyeon Coating |
|---|---|---|
| SiO2 concentration | 10 to 30% | 80 to 85% (Gyeon Q² Mohs EVO base layer) |
| Rated longevity | 6 to 18 months | 6 months to 48 months (Presidential, 2 layers) |
| Application environment | Garage or driveway (uncontrolled) | Climate-controlled facility |
| Surface prep | Typically skipped or minimal | Full decontamination plus correction |
| Manufacturer warranty | None or limited | Up to 48 months / 31,000 mi (Gyeon Q² Mohs EVO, 2 layers) |
| Publicly available | Yes | No, certified installers only |
Worth naming: both columns produce a hydrophobic finish. The separation is in the chemistry, the prep standard, the controlled environment, and the warranty coverage.
What Ceramic Coating Costs in Canton, OH
What Actually Drives the Price
Every quote I write takes four factors into account. Understanding them helps you budget intelligently and spot shops that are guessing.
- Package selection. Seasonal runs $250 to $450. Standard runs $500 to $1,125. Presidential runs $1,250 to $2,000. The package choice is the biggest single lever.
- Vehicle size. Four size classes: Small (compact cars, 2-door coupes), Medium (standard sedans, small SUVs, crossovers), Large (full-size SUVs, mid-size trucks), and XL (3-row SUVs, full-size trucks, up to dually pickups). Anything larger is quoted as specialty detailing.
- Paint condition. A clean car needs less prep. A three-year-old daily driver with tunnel-wash swirls needs multi-stage correction first. That correction is a separate line item on every invoice I write.
- Add-ons. Glass coating, wheel coating, plastic trim coating, and interior leather coating can be added to any base paint package.
The most accurate quote is one I write after seeing the vehicle. Call (330) 500-2257 or submit a photo quote requestand I'll come back with an itemized estimate, usually within one business day.
Paint Correction Before Coating Is Non-Negotiable
This deserves its own section because it directly affects your investment. A ceramic coating amplifies gloss significantly. Under the right light after coating, defects that were barely visible become clearly visible. If you install a 4-year Presidential Package coating over swirl-marked paint, those swirls are in your paint for 4 years. The only way to fix them is to remove the coating (a polishing process that strips the cured ceramic layer), correct the paint, and recoat. That costs considerably more than doing the correction right the first time.
I require at minimum an enhancement polish before any coating install. On darker colors, older paint, or vehicles that have been through automatic car washes regularly, I recommend full multi-stage paint correction before coating. Paint correction pricing: single-stage $649, two-stage $1,199, multi-stage $1,899 (includes a full detail).
Coating vs Repeated Waxing Over 4 Years
Upfront cost is the most common objection I hear on ceramic coating. Here's the 4-year math:
| Protection Method | Annual Cost | 4-Year Total | Protection Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional wax (every 3 months) | $400 to $600 | $1,600 to $2,400 | Minimal |
| Quality sealant (twice yearly) | $200 to $400 | $800 to $1,600 | Moderate |
| Presidential Package (48 mo) | Maintenance wash only | $1,250 to $2,000 + annual maint. | High (UV, chemical, hydrophobic) |
Past the cost arithmetic, a coating protects resale in ways wax cannot. A properly-maintained ceramic-coated vehicle with documented service history from a certified installer presents significantly better at trade-in or private sale than an equivalent uncoated vehicle. Sarchione Auto Gallery's reconditioning team can attest to the difference: it's visible immediately during inspection.
My Ceramic Coating Process, Step by Step
Inspection & Decontamination
Every coating job starts with a full inspection under my LED detailing lights. I check paint thickness with a digital gauge to verify safe correction margins, document existing defects photographically, and determine the correct prep protocol for your specific paint type and condition.
Decontamination follows inspection:
- Pre-rinse and foam wash with pH-neutral foam that loosens surface contamination without stripping existing protection or etching the surface.
- Iron fallout removal using a dedicated iron remover that dissolves embedded metallic particles (primarily brake dust). The chemical reaction turns the solution purple as it works, which is a reliable visual indicator of contamination load.
- Clay bar treatment to physically pull any remaining bonded contaminants from the paint. The surface should be perfectly smooth by touch before correction or coating.
Paint Correction
With the surface decontaminated, I correct using Rupes polishing systems, working panel by panel under inspection lighting and checking results after each pass to verify defect removal without over-correcting. The correction stage ends with an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipedown that strips all polishing oils from the surface. That's a critical step. Residual oils prevent the ceramic coating from bonding properly and produce premature failure. The IPA wipe also reveals the true, unenhanced finish, which is your confirmation of correction quality before coating begins.
Coating Application & Cure
Ceramic coating goes on panel by panel using applicator blocks and specialized suede cloths, in thin, even passes. Excess product creates high spots that must be leveled immediately before curing. Each panel is inspected under lighting before I move to the next.
After application, the vehicle moves to my IR (infrared) cure lamp stations. Infrared curing accelerates the initial cross-linking, reducing flash time and improving early hardness before the vehicle leaves the facility. Initial cure is 24 to 48 hours, during which the vehicle should stay dry and away from contamination. Full cure for Gyeon Q² Mohs EVO takes approximately 7 days. During that window, avoid automatic car washes, bird dropping exposure, and water pooling on the surface.
Pickup
At pickup, I walk through the coating's hydrophobic performance with a water spray test, cover the maintenance procedures specific to your tier, and hand over documentation for warranty purposes. For Presidential Package installations, I register the coating in Gyeon's database against your VIN. That registration establishes the manufacturer warranty record and transfers to a new owner in a private sale.
How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last in Ohio?
The Ohio Climate Test
Northeast Ohio puts specific stress on any protective coating. Here's how a properly-installed professional coating handles each factor:
- Road salt (November to March):Sodium chloride in aqueous solution is corrosive and bonds to paint surfaces. A ceramic coating's chemical resistance prevents salt solution from etching the clear coat and reduces adhesion of salt crystals to the surface, making post-winter decontamination washes much easier. Road salt makes vehicles rust 3 to 5 times faster than in non-salted environments, so the barrier function matters here.
- Freeze-thaw cycles: Repeated expansion and contraction stresses paint over time. Ceramic coatings are flexible inside their temperature range and bond directly to the clear coat rather than sitting on top of it, giving them better thermal cycling resistance than wax or sealant.
- Summer UV (June through August):Ohio summers regularly register UV index values of 7 to 10 on clear days. UV-A and UV-B radiation photodegrades clear coat polymers, causing oxidation, chalking, and color fade. Ceramic coatings block up to 99% of UV, effectively stopping the process for the coating's installed life.
- Hard water:Canton's municipal water has moderate to high mineral content. Hard water droplets that evaporate on paint leave calcium and magnesium carbonate deposits that etch into unprotected clear coat. A coating significantly reduces mineral adhesion, and water-spot etching becomes far less likely.
Maintenance That Protects Your Investment
A ceramic coating is not zero-maintenance. It dramatically reduces the work required, but the following practices determine whether your coating actually reaches its rated life:
- Wash with pH-neutral soap only.High-pH (alkaline) car wash soaps and degreasers degrade the coating's hydrophobic layer over time. Use soaps labeled as ceramic-safe or pH-neutral, such as Gyeon Q²M Bathe+.
- Never use an automatic brush wash. Spinning brushes create micro-abrasions across the coating, degrading its reflectivity and hydrophobic performance. Touchless washes use acceptable chemistry occasionally, but hand washing is always preferred.
- Remove bird droppings and tree sap promptly.Even with a coating, highly acidic contaminants need to come off within 24 hours. The coating buys you time; it doesn't grant indefinite immunity.
- Schedule an annual maintenance wash. A professional annual service (decontamination wash, iron fallout removal, coating booster application) keeps the coating performing at peak and verifies its integrity. I offer this as a standalone service for all coated vehicles, not just the ones I installed.
